“The Last of the Great Adventurers”

– Jessamy Calkin, The Daily Telegraph

Colonel John Blashford-Snell CBE

Explorer, Charity Ambassador & Author

John Blashford-Snell (JBS) (Born 22 October 1936) is one of the world’s most renowned and highly respected explorers. A former British Army officer, explorer and author he founded Operation Raleigh and the Scientific Exploration Society.

John is one of the last of a generation who really did explore in its truest sense pioneering new methods of exploration and discovering and documenting unchartered territories, nature and peoples. Over his extraordinary life of adventure John has conducted over 100 expeditions over the past 50 years all over the world concentrating on scientific research and community aid. From exploring the Blue Nile in Ethiopia for Emperor Hailie Selassie to delivering a grand piano to the Wai Wai in Guyana, discovering mammoth-like elephants in Nepal or inventing white water rafting in Africa on the Congo River. John has countless extraordinary stories to tell which he delivers through his engaging and highly entertaining speaking events.

JBS supports and works with numerous charities working with underprivileged youth in the UK as well as undertaking community aid projects in remote parts of the world. He also founded the UK charity Just a Drop and the Scientific Exploration Society, both of which still continue to do great work today.

In the 2019 new year honours list JBS was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for services to scientific research abroad and to young people in the UK. Author of countless books on his adventures, he is releasing an autobiographic account of his adventures at the end of 2022 “From Utmost East to Utmost West – My Life of Exploration and Adventure” which is being published by Bradt.

The year 2022 marks the 50th Anniversary of the product of the Range Rover. The first major test of this remarkable car was the epic British Trans-America Expedition in 1972 guided by John. The aim was to focus attention of the need to complete the Pan-American highway at 17,000miles, the longest road in the world. The central portion of the expedition through the Darien Gap was and still today, is considered to be the most pioneering motoring expedition ever attempted and in John’s words ‘a very close run thing’ John has prepared a fascinating lecture on this epic expedition.
